“The First Snow of Winter”

It always comes as a surprise
Whenever it snows for the
First time in winter. Hold out your
Hand to see indistinct snowflakes
Dissolve on the surface of your
Gloves. The outside world blanketed
In flawless white with sideways parts
Divvying up the sheets of frost.

“The Deer on the Side of the Road”

The deer on the side of the road
Make my shoulders tense up when I
Drive along the street. Too many
Are found victims of bent steel and
Corrupted plastic. Can they find
Consolation in the way we
Try to let them cross in darkest
Dusk and brightest dawn peacefully?
