I am student teaching a senior level class in Washington, DC. They have to write some poems on these prompts. I decided to try all 30 of them. However, I will not say what the prompt was but what its number was.

Prompt #2

This isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be

Being responsible for everyone in this little town

Especially when some hotshot in neon tights decides to inform me about my work.

“Thunderclap”

He says

“You can’t be shocking people all the time,

That’s not proper hero behavior.”

I look him down and start to feel the current rise through my fingers,

The electrons at my beck and call

A part of me.

“What do you suggest, Ubermensch?”

I ask

“Well,”

He says,

“In my six years of heroing I have never encountered an issue…”

He droned on,

And on,

And on,

And on.

“…and you’re just so irresponsible to electrocute the mayor’s gardener and you should always follow my plan…”

I rubbed my hands together.

“…I feel like you’re not even taking in what I have to tell you about being a hero…”

I placed his head betwixt my hands.

“…You need to follow the Hero Flowchart of Procedures™️ if you really want to succeed in this field, Thunder—”

Clap!
